As Jesus traveled throughout the region, teaching about the Kingdom of God and healing the sick, people began to follow Jesus. As the crowds grew, Jesus climbed up the mountain and sat down to teach.

Jesus, knowing the hearts of those around him, spoke to the kind of empire he was building – not a political empire, not even an empire that would make him popular with the crowds for long. Perhaps the disciples were beginning to expect that being close to Jesus would bring them power, wealth and prestige. Rather, Jesus began to describe an upside-down Kingdom. 

As we read this wisdom teaching of Jesus years later, we are invited to reflect. Which Kingdom are we pursuing in our day-to-day decisions?
