Easter
March’s highlight was a Sunday communion service we shared with Regina Chin Baptist church and First Karen Baptist Church. All three church choirs each shared an anthem and brought greetings. As we sang, “Count Your Blessings,” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” you could hear all three praising God in together in their own language.
This year is the 20th anniversary of thousands of Burmese refugees landing in Canada. The majority of those who came were Baptists. Our congregation supported them for a year or more and our churches grew together. In a future newsletter, we’ll have a fuller account of that story.
With sadness, we said farewell for now to Wayne Wyatt who passed away at the end of February. Wayne and Marlene had poured their lives out in serving the Karen people in Regina and across Canada. On one of his visits to Myanmar (Burma), the Karen Baptists recognized him at a national conference.
Another meaningful event was the youth group’s progressive supper. The youth were spoiled with Congolese samosas, Filipino pancit, grilled cheese, and ice cream Sundays. Seeing the teens sitting sharing seats in close quarters, enjoying each other and the food, and seeing the hosts’ happiness, was great.
We are entering the Easter season: the northern spring and the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection. Earth’s cycle of life growing out of death becomes a metaphor for the real rebirth we confess took place when Jesus rose from the dead.
May God renew your faith in Jesus Christ, who is alive and with you to the end.
Yours, Pastor Joel
