The parables of Jesus from the Gospel According to Matthew.

Jesus engaged listeners with his parables. They weren’t straightforward and required reflection. Even after hearing the same story, time after time, there seems to be still more. Jesus also used them to present people with a choice. Would they hear and understand? Would they listen?

In this week’s parable, Jesus again challenged his listeners by presenting them with a story filled with unthinkable outcomes designed to help his original audience see the irony in their own lives. A wedding for a king’s son would be a nation-wide multi-day celebration where all invitees would be expected to say yes and to dress for the occasion, recognizing the special nature of the event. A story about a royal wedding where invitees would decline their invitation? Unthinkable!
