Every farmer knows there’s a proper order to things. First, there’s the work, then there’ll be time to celebrate together. That is especially true at harvest time.
Jesus used harvest as a metaphor to describe God’s work in our lives and in the world. In this case, there is work to do but there must also be time for celebration.
The people returning from exile tackled the work before them under the leadership of Ezra and Nehemiah. Some of this was back-breaking physical labour. Some of it was heart-breaking work on their inner beings.
There was plenty of work but God also called the people to stop and celebrate together in thanks for all God had done. That’s the proper context for our celebrations.
