After God led the Hebrew people out of Egypt, through the water, through the desert, they refused at the last stage to follow God into the promised land. A team had been sent to spy out the land. They came back with a split report: two said they could advance, ten said it wasn’t possible. Would they have to choose? Would God make it obvious what they should do? Would there be consequences if they were wrong?
