Born of Mary: Jesus’ humanity in the eyes of the early church

An early image of the infant Jesus in a manger (3rd century)

Christmas is a celebration of Jesus’ birth and his humanity. God became a human being through Mary. This is what the church means by “the incarnation.”

What did the early church say about Jesus’ humanity? For hundreds of years, many rejected the history that Jesus was born of Mary and fully human. Others countered that that was exactly what the apostles had witnessed. What’s more, they insisted that without Jesus being fully human, we could not be saved.

Looking at Jesus’ humanity, early Christians reflected on why we suffer, on the value of our bodies and nature, and God’s purpose for creation. We will look at passages from Ignatius, Irenaeus, and Athanasius and hear a little about their lives as well.

Facilitated by Annabel and Joel.
