Notes from our summer:
Our congregation provided the means for so many children to attend camp this summer who couldn’t have gone otherwise. So it was nice that every week at Katepwa Lake Camp, “KBK”, young people from First Baptist: on staff, 1st and 2nd year LITs, campers of all ages, and family camp – which was full this year. If you can get any of our young people to stand still long enough on a Sunday, ask them how camp was, what they learned about God, and if they saw God at work.
Speaking of camps, Regina Open Door ran their camp again in our lower hall all summer. It was lovely to hear the children singing and enjoying themselves every day. This camp helps to welcome and orientate young newcomers to Canada while This year, Rob was there to take care of all the extra work that goes with having dozens of children coming and going every day.
Thanks again to Rob, the church dome had its weatherproofing completely restored this summer by local contractors. This was last addressed in the early 1990s and the protective coating was failing. Rob also coordinated a group of volunteers to repair and repaint the white wood and metal trim.
Thank you to Esther Gurnsey as she created the printed order of service and distributed all the music ahead of Sundays.
We had several patio parties and church BBQs this summer. Mark and Cheryl hosted a large group on their farm. Heather and Joel and their neighbours held a BBQ on their street, with around 100 coming from the block and wider neighbourhood. It was a very positive time on a street that often has difficult things to deal with. Thank you the Skeas, Wollbaums and Radford-Grants for hosting lovely evening events in their beautiful yards.
It is meaningful to make time to get to know one another more and to meet others for the first time. For some, this sort of thing comes naturally but for many of us it takes effort. God calls us to care for one another. Over the years, our congregation has had many people take the lead in welcoming and hosting. It is good to see us doing what we can to take up that torch.
With love, Pastor Joel
