Rev. Joel Russell-MacLean

Third Sunday of Advent – Joy!

This Sunday will be a special service in collaboration with Christ’s Commission Fellowship Regina.

I remember getting my first pair of glasses when I was ten. Suddenly, the world looked different. Everything was crisper, sharper, and brighter. I stood on the back deck of my parent’s home which looked out over trees and farmland around a river valley. The trees arrested my attention. I could see leaves and branches. I had no idea what I had been missing.

Jesus is the light of the world. As you welcome Jesus into your life, as you learn to trust and obey him, it is like seeing things for the first time. Everything becomes crisper, sharper, and brighter.

Sometimes the light of Jesus is great: you see hope and joy and love where before there was none.

Sometimes though, as witnesses of Jesus and the bible will tell you, sometimes what is brought to light is not pleasant. The pain, the darkness, the sin in the world – and inside us – is all much clearer too.

Advent encourages us to come to Jesus, to allow his light to shine on the good and the bad: the hope and the joy, as well as the suffering of the world and the need to repent.
