ScriptureIsaiah 58:9-13Psalm 1Matthew 14:22-331 John 4:7-13

Rev. Joel Russell-MacLean

fbcsermon_followMy doctor keeps telling me that one half-hour walk a day makes a big difference in health over a lifetime. What would people from before the advent of the car make of us having to be disciplined about walking, and the current popularity of fitbits? Walking and life used to be tied closely together.

The Bible talks a lot about walking as well, for just that reason. Most of the time, when they wrote about walking, the authors of scripture were talking about “living”. Some paths, some ways, lead to life. Others lead to death.

Jesus said, “follow me and you will find abundant life” and men and women did. They became Jesus’ disciples, walking with Jesus, living with Jesus, and imitating his way of life. So when Jesus walked on water, what else would a good disciple do but try do it too. So Peter walked on water. When he began to fail, Jesus picked him up and saved him from death.

If you walk after Jesus, there are no guarantees that everything that happens in life will seem good or fair. But with Jesus, life is different, richer, more full. And he will be there to pull you up when you fail.

A Service of Affirmation
